Proud to serve the Troy community!

Troy, New York is the seat of Rensselaer County. The land now occupied by the city was originally inhabited by the Mahican Indian tribe, and then settled by the Dutch in the 17th century. The town itself was established by the Lansing and Van der Hayden families, incorporating as a village in 1789 and as a city in 1816. The name, which was chosen by popular vote in 1789, comes from the city in ancient Greece, which was at that time thought to be legendary prior to its excavation by German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann nearly 100 years later. The city’s nickname, however, is somewhat more prosaic: “Collar City”, referring to its 19th century preeminence in the manufacture of shirts, collars and cuffs. In fact, Troy resident Hannah Montague is often credited with having invented the detachable shirt collar in 1827. Another famous Troy resident, “Uncle Sam” Wilson, is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, but the city remembers him each year with its annual Uncle Sam Parade.

Troy today is known for being home to Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute, one of the nation’s top engineering schools. Troy’s commitment to science and technology even extends to its younger residents and visitors, as one of its top attractions is the Children’s Museum of Science and Technology. Other area attractions include the 18-hole Frear Park Municipal Golf Course, the 1870’s-era Troy Music Hall, and the Tri-City ValleyCats, a minor league affiliate of the Houston Astros baseball team.

In the wintertime, Knickerbacker Park draws skaters and hockey players to make use of its indoor and outdoor rinks during the freezing weather. With the spring come milder temperatures, and the return of baseball, soccer, basketball, tennis and track to the park.   In the autumn local teams make use of its football fields. The park has been a hub of community activity year-round since it was first established back in the 1920s.
