Proud to serve the Altamont community!

The Village of Altamont, originally occupied by Dutch settlers in the 17th century, became known as the Hellerburgh in the early 18th century and as the hamlet of Knowersville in the early 19th century. The village incorporated in 1890, adopting the name of Altamont, which means “high mountain,” in honor of the Heidelberg Mountains that surround the town. The Albany and Susquehanna Railroad Company built a train depot in town which was used by summer visitors seeking to vacation in the shadow of these mountains. Although the train station closed in 1963, the historic building is enjoying a new life as the Altamont Free Library.

Altamont today still caters to a tourist trade, attracting visitors to its quaint old inns such as the Altamont Old Stone House. This historic property was built around the time of the Revolutionary War and is said to have served as a stop along the Underground Railroad. Altamont has four parks offering recreational opportunities ranging from a swimming pool to tennis courts to outdoor concerts in the summertime. The Village Museum, housed in the Altamont Village Municipal Building, contains a number of pictures and artifacts related to local history. Every summer since 1893 the Altamont Fair attracts visitors from all over Albany, Schenectady and Greene counties to enjoy its live entertainment, livestock exhibitions, crafts and cooking demonstrations and carnival games and rides. The fairgrounds host other events year-round, including music festivals, horse shows, car shows and beer and wine festivals, and even provide cold-weather storage for boats, RVs and motorcycles.

Altamont’s mountain setting makes it slightly colder than the rest of the Capital Region, with January and February seeing daily temperatures that often don’t make it out of the 20s. Snowfall is on par with the rest of the region, with about 16 to17 inches on average from late December through January.
